A DAY AT GOOD HOPE
|
Waken
to the sound of birds and the fragrance of sweet jasmine outside your window.Stroll
to the kitchen door and grab a Blue Mountain coffee and fresh-squeezed OJ. Watch the morning mist. Then concentrate on catching first sight of the hummingbirds. Then watch some more watch the shafts of sunlight make diamonds of the morning dew. Watch the dim light turn to gold. Play some tennis. Take a swim. Eat a hearty breakfast. Drive down that magic lane by old stone fences and endless fields of flowers and fruit, meander through the 300-year-old architecture of Falmouth while the stalls of crafts, fruits and veg, fresh fish and pork open for the day's trading. Work off breakfast with a brief jog down Time 'n' Place beach.
Don't be surprised if you don't see another soul for 2 miles. Swing by the
beach bar and order lunch (comes with your stay at Good Hope) ~ coconut
shrimp, jerk chicken, escovitch fish or good old hamburgers and fries. Down
a cold Red Stripe while you wait ~ or something more potent as here is a
full bar. Swing on the swing, play checkers or chess. Mellow out to Bob
Marley on the sound system. Or just enjoy the quiet, broken only by the
lapping of the sea. Toss some driftwood or swim out to the reef. The water
here is so buoyant you'll think you're floating in a turquoise dream. If you want to play golf, for variouis fees driver Mark will take you to the fabulous new White Witch course at the Ritz Carlton 30-40 minutes west. He will drive you back up to the 18th Century whenever you're ready. Take
a trail ride through acres of sun-drenched citrus groves (tomorrow morning's
juice still on the tree). Let the trail lead you down through a deep green
bamboo forest by the cool Martha Brae River. Stop for a swim (or come back
to the river later for a cookout.) See the old flume that still carries
fruit to be shipped off to England from this working farm. Wave at the workers
as they flash you friendly smiles. Shower for dinner but don't dress up. Shoes: optional ... watching the long sunset: obligatory. Eat
hearty and drink deep for this is one of the best times of day ~ you'll
never eat better. Push back the furniture in the music room and dance. Play
CDs as loud as you wish. Stroll down to the Family Room for a classic film.
Before turning in, lay blankets on the front lawn of the Great House
and watch stars so close you can touch them. Listen to the night sounds
of crickets and cicadas. Grab some sleep because it all starts again tomorrow. |
